How to Choose a Domain Name Step-by-step Guide 2017

Now, it could be you are starting a new brand, maybe you came up with an excited product or service, and you are willing to take it online. You are filled with ambitions that your business will as successful as the Apple Company in the near future.

Part.1Domain Name's Importance

Before you sit down to start your business online, you must be stacked with the first step of your BIG Business — You must have a website, and in order to build a website, another question came up — Which Domain Name will be the Best one for my business?trustworthy_online-earning

Your domain name is your business card on the Internet, it can make you or even break you down.

Perhaps you may have a list of options available, however, the decision of choosing the best domain name for your website may make you annoyed, because you’ll have to live with this decision for quite a long time.

Now that the domain name represents both you and your business, its importance cannot be overemphasized.

I’ve concluded the following 3 points so that you will easily check them.

#1. It is Your First Impression.

Your domain’s URL is the first thing your visitors will see. Just imagine a visitor from google(SERP) searching engine result page, your website and your competitors URL are all listed in one page. Which website will be clicked? A clear and professional website URL or a one combined with numbers and meaningless characters.

For example:trustworthy_online-earning
tthey.com or t1r45f.com? which one is more trustworthy?

Of course, the first one. It seems more like a brand name and the later one seems meaningless.

You see, a good domain name will give your new visitors the first impression of your business – Professional and Trustworthy, while a bad one will send visitors running away without click to open your webpage.

#2. It Affects SEO.

While the Google had claimed that the Exact Match Domains is no longer a necessity, however, a domain name contains the keyword can still help your SEO ranking. You shouldn’t doubt it 🙂

#3. It Affects the Traffic of Your Website.

Just as you can see. Domain names have a massive impact all over the web in terms of click-through rate, traffic such as from:

  • Search Engines (Google/Yahoo/Bing etc.)
  • Social Media (Facebook/twitter/Reddit/G+ etc.) results
  • Referring linkstraffic_online-marketing,domain names
  • Type-in Traffic
  • Brandability
  • Offline advertising

There’s a huge wealth of places that your domain name impacts your brand and your online marketing. We can’t ignore this.

So, how do you chose the best domain name for your business? That is precisely what I'm going to share with all of you today. Now let's get down to the business.

Part.2 - How to Choose a Perfect Domain Name?

1. Avoid Hyphens

One of the bigger mistakes I made when registering my first domain, was to hyphenate the name.

Sometime later I discovered a site using the non-hyphenated (hmm… that LOOKS like an oxymoron) version of my domain name – and he was promoting the same products as I had on my site.

This webmaster is STILL capitalizing on my oversight and selling to my visitors that forget the hyphen in my domain name. reddit_domain-name-chosen

Please do remember hyphens will make your domain name hard to spell and pounce. Just imagine you recommend your friends with one website, take Reddit if it had a hyphen here for example…

“Have you heard a great new site Red_dit.com? Oh, please don’t forget, there exists a hyphen here, just between ‘red’ and ‘dit’ “

What would your friends think? I dare to say, Reddit wouldn’t be that popular if that was the case.

Personal Experience

If possible, please do not use numbers.

Domains contain numbers maybe welcomed by Chinese, 8888.com for example, they are more superstitious. If your potential customers are not Chinese, you'd better to contain no number.

2. Make it Easy to Spell and Pronounce

One of my expired website ‘byebye910.com’ is a good example of a bad domain name. Just speak it out, you may guess this website’s address may be ‘bybynineone0.com’ ‘bybynineonezero.com’, it’s too hard to explain.

Imagine you have to explain loudly ‘B-Y-E-B-Y-E, number 9, number 1, number 0 dot com’ several times a day. This is a torture to me!

Personal Experience

Please, I beg you not to experience such torture just like me before.

3. Consider Using Broad Keywords

The next rule of thumb is to include at least one, preferably two, of your important ‘keywords’ in your website’s name – But you need to treat carefully here. If you try to awkwardly stuff keywords into your domain, it comes across as generic (just like we talked above).seo_domain-name_earn-money-online

I mention here from an SEO perspective. It can help. But don’t get me wrong, it can help. It can help mostly for this instant intuition portion, but also a little bit from an SEO perspective because of the anchor text that you generally will accrue when people link over to your domain.

Let’s assume that your site is about dog training. So which keywords work best? Dog, puppy, pooch? Train, training or trainer?

One way to decide is to find out which of those keywords or keyword combinations is searched for most often.

To find that out visit WordTracker.com. Just as the pictures shown below. You can use their free trial to establish which of your keywords is the most popular.

Using the keywords we chose above, WordTracker shows us that the keyword ‘dogs’ outstrips the word ‘puppy’ by about 34,000 searches in a period of 60 days. Knowing that should make your decision just a little easier.

Personal Experience

You can also use Google Keyword Planner to generate more seed keywords, and then put them into WordTracker to find which one is more popular.

4. Make it Brandable

Brandable, of course, are always better than generic.

It means when you hear the domain name, it sounds like a brand.brandable_best-domain-name

A brandable domain name is unique and stands out from the competition, while a generic domain name is usually stuffed with keywords and unmemorable. And a brandable domain name is easier to remember for a long time. Now for example.

Which of the following names will you remembers a week from now? DogTraining.com, DogCollege.com or DoggyU.com?

Personal Experience

Your domain name is how visitors will find, remember, and share your company on the web. It is the foundation of your brand.

5. Make it DOT COM

I know it’s 2017, and I shouldn’t have any bias to other domain name extensions (just as you can check via Namesilo, it’s TLD contains .com, .net, .org and .biz etc.)

Why does .COM matter so so so much and we are still talking about it?

The answer, again, is that this is the most recognized, most easily accessible ways to reach your web address.

.COM is your best choice, because this domain name extension come to mind first when people think of web addresses.earn money online_how to choose a domain name_com-vs-net-vs-org

You wouldn’t want your potential customers to head off to ‘thepuppy.com’ if your website is registered as ‘thepuppy.net’, would you?

Though there do have many successful websites with .ORG, .NET, for you, it is the safer bet to own your website with .COM extension. Just as you can see the pie chart on the right hand, .com occupied the 75% internet market-share.

Please do not hesitate going with .COM.

Personal Experience

#1. You should go with .com first. If .COM was taken by others, I suggest you'd better brainstorm a new domain name for future consideration.

#2. Please do remember to avoid the weird domain extensions such as '.cc', '.pizza', '.club' etc.

6. Make it Short

The shorter the better, this rule will never outdated. The fewer characters a domain name has, the easier it is to type, the easier to say, to share, to recommend it to others.

Hopefully, I’ve never chosen a domain name more than 10 characters, 8 characters are the maximum length.

Just imagine, ‘whatmakestheworldbeautiful.com’ and ‘hiearth.com’ which one is better?

In the world which social media had almost occupied the whole world today, the shorter characters means your URL will be fully demonstrated while the long name, they get compressed or will not fully shown. That’s a shame on your brand 🙁

Just as the data shown from the Gaebler.com, there do exist a direct correlation between domain name length and popularity. You can check the chart below.

domain name length_earn money online

The top-5 websites have approximately 6 characters of their domain name.

Personal Experience

#1. Aim for 6-14 characters

#2. The shorter the better. But it seems the shorter domain names are taken LONG time ago and sold for thousands of dollars. So if you can’t find something short, make it brandable.

#3. My own site - kekaki.com is exactly 6 characters.

7. Be aware of Trademark Infringement

Before you sit down registering a new domain name, you’d better check the availability on social media sites and trademarks.

Buying a domain containing a trademark name could result in a legal battle and the registrar will likely side with the trademark owner. To avoid legal issues, you should stay away from names that already have trademarks.

You may want to create Facebook fan pages to engage with your visitors, if the social media site for that domain name is occupied, it would cause some problems.

Personal Experience

You can use Knowem.com to search your potential domains names here. It will feed back the results if it’s available throughout over 25 popular social networks, and also if there are any trademarks already registered for the name.

If it’s taken, consider tweaking it so that you can create original social media profiles.

8. Use Domain Name Generator to Gather Ideas

Okay, so by this point you should have at least a general idea of which word should contained in your domain names and which characters should be avoid.

To easily accelerate your procedure, you can use Domain name generator to generate more and pick the most preferred one.

Here are 2 of my often use domain name generator tool:

1. Wordoid
This free tool allows you type in a seed word, after you set the option

2) Quality: The high the more brandable
